Think Simulation
The International Committee of Olympics has voted to recognise sport climbing as an Olympic federation with the right to participate in the Olympic games. In practise, this means that there's a big chance that Climbing will be included in the 2020 Olympic games.

IMHO, it cheapens climbing to a fanfare akin to gymnastic.

If I remember correctly (from scene of the old movie "Scream of Stone", (indoor) climbing has been a competitive sport for a while.
Climbing is not an elite sport. It's good more people can enjoy it recreationally.

What is the definition of elite sport?  Are you referring to a sport that is expensive or only being practiced by a few?  Talking about expensive sport that is being practiced by a few,  speed skating, luge, and skeleton are first coming to my mind.   It costs a family about $3,000 USD a month, yes, a month, to support a speed skater made to the top of Washington state.  How much do you spend on climbing monthly?  How many people participate in luge or skeleton?

It makes sense to compete in speed skating, as it differs little from track cycling race.  In the 1980's, Climbing competition was set by the equipment manufacturers and climbing gyms to promote the sales.

What I learned from my days in Toronto is that the indoor gym climbers are a different breed from the outdoor natural climbers.  I fully agree with the disagreement.

Well, I used to be/started as a gym climber. I still like sport climbing a lot where one can push his limit with little commitment. I enjoy remote alpine climbs too.
Gym climbing helped me a great deal to get stronger and fitter for the "real" rocks. Life is but an illusion. What is real? Maybe plastics;)
