Realization: It's A Trade Route
By Dougald MacDonald
Patxi Usobiaga of Spain has made the third ascent of Realization, the 2001 Chris Sharma route at Céüse, France, that may be 5.15a. Sharma never graded the climb, and Frenchman Sylvain Millet, who made the second ascent in late May, would only say it was much harder than the 5.14c climbs he had already done at Céüse.
Usobiaga nearly climbed Realization last summer. He made a quick repeat of Biographie, the 5.14c that makes up the first half of the Sharma line, and reportedly looked very strong on the upper half. The Spaniard was certainly well-prepared for a major send this summer. In the last four and a half months, he has redpointed two other climbs 5.14c or harder and onsighted four 5.14a routes. Usobiaga finished second at last weekend’s major competition at Serre Chevalier, France, and is ranked third in the world in competition climbing. |
