What is the definition of elite sport? Are you referring to a sport that is expensive or only being practiced by a few? Talking about expensive sport that is being practiced by a few, speed skating, luge, and skeleton are first coming to my mind. It costs a family about $3,000 USD a month, yes, a month, to support a speed skater made to the top of Washington state. How much do you spend on climbing monthly? How many people participate in luge or skeleton?
It makes sense to compete in speed skating, as it differs little from track cycling race. In the 1980's, Climbing competition was set by the equipment manufacturers and climbing gyms to promote the sales.
What I learned from my days in Toronto is that the indoor gym climbers are a different breed from the outdoor natural climbers. I fully agree with the disagreement. |
